A pedestrian resort where cars are banned, Zermatt has retained the charm of an unspoilt Valais village. Strolling along the legendary Bahnhofstrasse as soon as you leave the station, gazing up at the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat, hurtling down a ski slope in the middle of summer or skirting the highest peaks in the Alps are all unique experiences you can enjoy during a stay in Zermatt (see our collection of luxury chalet rentals in Zermatt here). The resort is bustling in both winter and summer, offering a wealth of events throughout the year, and is open 365 days a year.
Zermatt Ski Area and Activities
In winter, the 224-miles of slopes in the Matterhorn Ski Paradise make Zermatt one of the best ski areas in the world. This is skiing with a view, with some impressively long runs: such as the legendary ‘Reine Blanche’, the longest ski run in the world, with its 14 miles of red runs in one go and a vertical drop of almost 2,300m. However, it would be wrong to see Zermatt as just an alpine ski resort: in addition to a plethora of après-ski activities, the village also offers cross-country skiing, ski touring, heli-skiing and a host of ice sports (from skating to curling). Dog-sleigh rides and a range of aerial activities are also available. Alpine skiing remains an option in summer, with some areas opening in the mornings. From spring onwards and with the arrival of fine weather, mountaineers from all over the world flock to Zermatt, whether to attempt an ascent of the mythical Matterhorn or to tackle their first summit at over 4,000m: it’s no coincidence that the Zermatt Mountain Guides are among the most renowned in the Alps. However, you don’t need to be wearing crampons to enjoy the high altitude. The outstanding network of cable cars and cog railways provides access to a range of gentle mountain excursions, whether to the Gornergrat (3,089m), the Schwarzsee (2,583m) or the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (3,883m). All great opportunities to enjoy a lunch or snack at very high altitude with a view of the snow-covered peaks. Lower down, outdoor activities abound, from golf and mountain biking to hiking and water sports.
Accommodation, Restaurants and Nightlife
The quality of accommodation in Zermatt is also second to none. As well as a wide range of luxury chalet rentals, the village is also packed with top-of-the-range hotels, both historic (Hôtel National Zermatt, Monte Rosa) and more recent (Cervo Mountain Resort, Schweizerhof Zermatt, Omnia, etc.). Firmly rooted in Switzerland but linked to nearby Italy and open to the rest of the world, Zermatt boasts a vast culinary offering that regularly wins awards from the world’s leading gastronomic guides. No fewer than four restaurants have been awarded Michelin stars, while many establishments combine breathtaking views and mouth-watering dishes: dining on the terrace overlooking the snow-capped peaks is a must here. The heart of the ski area is home to some of the world’s oldest establishments, including the Rifflehaus, which has been delighting guests with its traditional cuisine since 1853, and of course Chez Vrony, renowned for its home-cured meats, organic produce and mountain and Mediterranean cuisine. The après-ski and nightlife scene is not to be outdone, as Zermatt has built up a worldwide reputation in this area. Between two ski descents, you can sit down at the Schneebar to listen to the last remaining echoes of the high mountains or enjoy the last rays of sunshine at the Champagner bar or the Iglu-Dorf. There are plenty of bars in the village, including the famous Harry’s Bar and Snowboat. If you’re looking for a night out, the party continues in one of the resort’s many clubs.
Shopping in Zermatt
Strolling along the Banhofstrasse (station street) is a must in Zermatt. The main thoroughfare of the pedestrian village features a multitude of bars and boutiques. We’re in the heart of Switzerland: chocolatiers, watchmakers and jewellers are at the top of their game here. A multitude of watch brands are represented. They alternate with a wide choice of chic clothing and sportswear shops.
